Hearts and Minds
Living a healthy lifestyle has many benefits-not all physical.  When everything is working together-when your body and your mind are strong-you have more energy and self-confidence and can take more control of your life.  for people who live with mental illnesses, a healthy lifestyle is especially important.  Sometimes, it is easy to become so focused on treating a mental illness that physical health is neglected.  But having a healthy body contributes to emotional recovery.  Eating the right foods, exercising, finding ways to manage stress, getting enough rest and having friends and activities that you enjoy are all part of healthy living.  For more information and resources on healthy living, click on the Programs tab at the top of the page and then select Hearts and Minds.

Parents and Teachers as Allies

NAMI Utah is looking for people (statewide) to be trained as part of a team for the Parents & Teachers as Allies (faculty in-service) for elementary and secondary schools.  This two hour in-service covers:

  • Recognizing early-onset mental illness in children and adolescents
  • Understanding family reactions to mental illnesses and guidelines for helping families
  • Learning about community resources available
  • Strengthening the alliance between parents & school professionals

We are looking for the following people to train:

  1. Educators or counselors (can be retired) with an interest in mental health education
  2. Family members (preferably someone with lived experience of coping with a child with early-onset mental illness)
  3. Parents with a young child or youth currently struggling with an early-onset illness to talk about the complex and exhausting realities of parenting a child with mental illness
  4. Mental health consumers who had mental illness as a child who can talk about the difficulties of dealing with the school experience

Parents & Teachers as Allies is a component of Hope for Tomorrow but can be used alone.  Please contact This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it 801-323-9900 to sign up.

Connection: NEW Support Group!!

NAMI National has chosen Utah to institute a new Consumer Support Group Program called Connection.  NAMI Connection is a weekly support group for people living with mental illness in which people learn from each others' experiences, share coping strategies, and offer each other encouragement and understanding.  The goal is to have a Connection Support Group held every night of the week in every major city across the country.  With this program, mental health consumers can find a group any night of the week anywhere they travel and will be familiar with the structure of the group and what to expect.  We are recruiting support group facilitators now!  To learn how you can become a Connection facilitator, contact Spencer at 801-323-9900, This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it .
